THE LITTLE GIRL WHO FLEW
She must fly it seems so she spread out her wings.

There was a little girl who knew
that her hair would grow long if she flew.
But she must fly it seems so she spread out her wings
and flew off as her hair grew and grew.
She found that her hair got so long
that it tangled as she flew along.
It got caught in a tree where she couldn`t get free
but the birds there all sang her a song.

THREE LITTLE KITTENS
VISIT THE MILKY WAY AND DRINK TOO MUCH MILK.

The west wind howled. The no rest wind scowled!
And the boat started spinning round and round.
Then after a time one kitten did whine,
“My tummy is hurting me so!”
Said another, ”Me too!” and the other, ”boohoo!
I do think we really should go!”
So they turned their ship round, back home they were bound,
with all of them wearing a frown.
And how the moon laughed as the little ship passed!
And finally the boat came to ground.
They all ran to Mother, each faster than the other,
and cried, “Oh too much we did eat!”
So she gave them a pill and said, “Soon you’ll be well.
Just having you back’s such a treat!
She put them to bed without any bread,
And said, “No more milk you’ll be fed,
at least for a while. Come on give a smile!
What a wonderful trip you have had!”

REBA THE AMOEBA
Which amoeba is Reba when he splits?

Reba the Amoeba went off to seek his dinner.
“For if I don’t you see,” he said, I’m bound to get much thinner.”
He crawled along so very long by means of make-believe feet.

"I think that I shall starve to death without something to eat."

At last he found some food he liked and ate it till he grew,
to be a big amoeba and ‘twas time to split in two.
“It’s time for one to become two,” he said, “without delay.”
And so he split and down did sit, Then got up and said, “Hey!
Where as before there was but one, I see there now are two.
The question I can’t figure out, 'which is me and which is you!'
For I was you and you were me I think the way it was.
Now you are me and I am you, the reason just because.
You say your name is Reba, but I assure you that is me.
You’ll have to find another name. You can’t be me and thee.
I hope you’ve learned your lesson.
We learn something every day.
Now I think that we should split my friend.
I’m going out to play.

THE MISCHIEVOUS CLOUD
The cloud let down some rain all round and laughed.

I saw a cloud who thundered loud and said, “A very nice day.”
The cloud let down some rain all round and laughed when I yelled, “Hey!”
The rain and thunder made me get under a great big hickory tree.
The cloud then stopped. My face I mopped and asked why he did this to me.
He said, ”I must rain. It’s all in the game. It’s part of a great big plan.
Although you get wet, I’m willing to bet, that you’ll want me to do it again.
It’s great,” he growled, to be a cloud, and to fly across the land.
When I thunder loud I draw a fine crowd.
Why every man thinks that I’m grand!
I’m really very nice you see, once you get to know me.
For I make grow each flower and tree. One better you can’t show me!
I fly so gently in the blue, just like a powder puff,
and make it rain on Sister Sue and dogs named Ruff and Fluff.
I tried my best to rain on Joe but he’s a clever fella.
And every time I did he’d go and put up his umbrella.
One sunny day Joe went to play. Now is my chance I’ll bet.
I think if I will rain real high, then I’ll get Joe all wet.
The rain came down on cat and mouse. How I did cry and weep,
when Joe climbed up to his tree house and there went fast asleep.”
I said good-by to the cloud on high, “What a nice talk this has been!”
But the cloud let fall, just about all, and I got soaked to my skin!

THE MERRY-GO-ROUND WITH A FROWN
Little planes who flew knew of no clue.

I think our town has never found
The Merry-go-round with a frown.
As he spins around he makes a fine sound.
His horses bound up and down.
He loves to sing a merry song
with children riding all day long.
There is no one who doesn’t belong.
The question is what’s wrong?
The roller coaster he’d concede,
“The Merry-go-round has a frown.”
The Ferris-wheel agreed, “Indeed!”
And the clown said, “Yes he’s down.”
Little Planes who flew knew of no clue,
“Could this be true? It is so new!”
Little trains, “Choo choo! Is it the flu?
What can we do? We love him too!”
Little boats go round, can't hear the sound
of the Merry-go-round. "Why is he down?"
I wound the Merry-go-round and found
he could not make a sound.
When he couldn’t go round I said to the clown,
“The Merry-go-round broke down!
A nut and screw made him like new.
Then around and around he flew.
Now he’s cheery again, just hear the merry din,
and the children are happy too!

A STRANGE RACE
He ran so fast that himself he passed.

There was a man who ran so fast he thought he was the wind.
“Why I can run as fast,” he said, “as all the world can spin”.
And so he ran with all his might as fast as fast can be.
He ran so fast that himself he passed and yelled, “Hey wait for me!”
He saw ahead his other self and could not believe his eyes.
“I know that fate has made me late. To this test I really must rise.”
He knew that he must catch himself, if ever he was to win.
He thought, “I’m gaining slowly now. I’ll catch me in the end.”
They ran and ran across the land each fighting for the lead.
“This is embarrassing,” he said. “To myself I must concede.”
He lost the race, was in disgrace and said, “Myself I can never face.”
So he walked to his place at a very slow pace.
Now isn’t this a very strange case?

THE FRIENDLY RAT VISITS NEW GAL BABY
He said, "How funny! Just like a bunny!"

“Give me three cheers. Lend me your ears.
It is no secret that,
some folks I smell don’t like me well,
but I am the friendly rat.
I ask that these would love me please
I am so small and gray.
I like cream cheese and seldom sneeze.
I’m friendly all the day.
       I like to mouse around the house
and be a pet to you.
A cuter boo you never knew
not even at the zoo.
     The other day, it was so gay,
a baby came to stay.
There she lay and I would say,
I’ll visit her if I may.”
So up he climbed, as the old clock chimed,
to see the new gal baby.
He said, “How funny! Just like a bunny!
She’ll be my true pal maybe.
I’ll give the miss a little kiss
and nibble at her toes.
And if she smiles I’ll walk for miles
to bring to her a rose.”
      The baby cried. The mother spied
to see what was the matter.
And you could hear until next year
the clatter and the tatter.
The rat ran round, downtown was bound,
the noise frightened him so.
So if you’ve found a rat don’t frown.
He loves you don’t you know?

THE BUBBLE WHO SAW THE WORLD
"Why do they want to pop me?"

There was a pretty bubble. My! My! My!
Who decided that she would fly up in the sky.
“I want to see the world from way up high
before I grow old and fade away and die.”
So up the bubble flew like a sparkling pearl.
But it’s such a big world for such a little girl.
A breeze took her up and how she did whirl!
As she rode oh the wind it would toss her and hurl!
She sighed, oh how beautiful everything is!”
She looked at each sight then by she would whiz.
The children looked up as she flew by.
They shouted and pointed at her in the sky.
    “Look how fine the bubble’s colors are!
They wind and they shine like a glistening star.
I never saw a bubble that could fly so far.
I wish we could catch it and put it in a jar.
   See how it wobbles and shimmers on the wind!
And look how the colors all dance about and spin!
I wonder how far that pretty bubble’s been!
If ever it should pop it would certainly be a sin.”
     But some of them ran to try and pop her.
But she dodged them and, soon she flew on too far.
They called, “Won’t you please come back pretty bubble?”
But she knew that to do so would only mean trouble.
       “Why do you think they would want to pop me?
I really cannot understand.
They like me and say that I’m very pretty,
but then try to hit me with their hand!”
ThThen she flew over each stop and hill,
and she flew over dale.
She flew over each rock and rill,
and how she could sail!
     Then the wind tossed her up as tho in a blizzard.
“For me to survive would take the power of a wizard.
I know that I cannot last very long,
for I am so fragile and the wind is so strong.
But I’m happy because I’ve come far in this world,
and seen many sights and gone on a big swirl.
I’ve been high and low and I’ve flown over trees,
and talked to the rainbow, the butterflies and bees.”
     And with this the bubble just faded away.
But I know other bubbles will make the day gay,
and fly through the air with the greatest of ease,
and children will chase them if only to tease.

MR. MESSY WAS A LITTERBUG
He tossed trash onto his lawn.

Mr. Messy thought
that he was a citizen first class.
He sat on the porch
while his yard was filled with trash.
For Mr. Messy was a litterbug.
He tossed trash onto his lawn.
He didn’t know what a trash can was for,
but he knew once he tossed trash it was gone.
    He laughed as he threw all his cans around
because he thought that he had style.
And they made a nice clunk when they fell down
and landed in the pile.
    His friends all joined into the fun
and threw their trash onto the heap.
They kept on till it weighed a ton
and the mess was mighty steep.
     A little boy came by one day
and cut one of his toes.
And there wasn’t any place left
where a pretty flower grows.
A little puppy found
that she had fallen and hurt her nose.
And how many mice were running around
only Mr. Messy knows.
     One neighbor went and said to him,
“Won’t you please clean up this pigpen?”
But Mr. Messy frowned at him and said,
“You’re surely not my best friend!”
     Then one day Mr. Messy stumbled
as he was walking thru his yard.
He fell head first into the mess
because he wasn’t on his guard.
He slid beneath the bottles,
paper, cans and broken glass.
Try as he could he couldn’t get out
from underneath that trash!
     And so he spent his life
trying to slide his way around.
And that’s the way it’ll be for us
if we keep throwing trash upon the ground!

THE GRAND HAND FAN DOES A FAN DANCE
"To and fro I swayed and oh the breeze I made!"

“I am a fine fan. I am so grand!
I’m the proudest fan in all the land!
I have a nice picture, see, painted on me,
the prettiest picture that ever could be.
     How lovely I stand in a fine lady’s hand,
with her just a fanning to lead the band.
The summer is when I come out to play
but I go to sleep on a cold winter’s day.
    It’s awful though
when there’s winter snow
cause I’m folded you know
and in the trunk I go.
It’s embarrassing I say
to be treated that way
and then have to lay
shut up every day!
But how nice to unfold and then to stretch
when I hear her say, ‘My fan will you fetch?’
     Now it’s hot I’m happy
cause she gets me in a snappy.
When she puts me down
then I take a little nappy.
Today I looked so grand in a fine lady’s hand
and when she would fan a nice breeze began.
     First I took a regal stance.
Then I did a fan dance!
To and fro I swayed
and oh the breeze I made!
I was prouder than a blue and gold teacup!
And like a peacock’s fan I really opened up!
Oh dear me! It couldn’t be!
Could that be a snowflake there I see?
Oh well! Do tell! I’m getting sleepy and how!
So I’ll say goodnight to each of you for now.”

THE PRETTY LITTLE COTTON GIRL
She lived in a field, not forgotten,

There once was a pretty little cotton,
just as fluffy as she could be.
She lived in a field, not forgotten,
as anyone could plainly see.
How happy she was those long summer days
as the rain and the sun made her grow!
She thought, “I plan to live here under the sun’s rays.
That I definitely know.”
But one day she was picked and taken away.
“Where in the world are they taking us?”
She had no choice but to obey,
so she didn’t make much of a fuss.
The pretty cotton said, “Won’t you just look at me?
I certainly am quite a mess!”
But a wiser cotton said, “No you aren’t, can’t you see,
because now we’ve become a pretty dress!”
A little girl went home with the new dress on,
and the cotton was happy just humming a song.
So when things don’t seem to be going your way,
just remember the cotton and have a happy day.

PLANET OF THE ROUND PEOPLE.
THE PEOPLE SHAPED LIKE A BALL
They assumed people on other worlds looked like themselves.

Way out on another planet everyone is shaped like a ball,
and so are the trees the cats and the dogs
and also the houses and their walls.
     They had thought about people on other worlds
and they assumed they looked like themselves.
They couldn’t imagine that other boys and girls
could be shaped different than their fairies and elves.
     A wise old man would answer when a wise old man could be found,
“We must assume that God has been wise enough
that he would make everyone round.
Is it not written in our Good Book
that God loves the Planet of the Round People?
Is not that the reason that we go to his church
and praise the Lord as we are under His steeple?
If there is intelligent life to be found,
we must surely assume that it must be round.
If there are other rabbits, if there is another hound,
they’d have to be round else how’d they bounce around?
     I can’t imagine how anyone could be shaped differently than a ball.
Why if they were then what would they do if they were to happen to fall?
For here if a child should fall out of a tree,
he just bounces away and doesn’t hurt his knee.
     And suppose he should want to go downtown.
Why all he has to do is bounce up and down!
And here you don’t ever see a kid with a frown,
for everybody has such fun bouncing like a clown.
     Yes, I can state with certainty to one and all,
if there are other people then they're shaped like a ball!"
